The NSW Member for Marrickville, Carmel Tebbutt, has announced that The Settlement is to receive a grant under the Community Building Partnerships (CBP) grants.
The Settlement provides social housing and community programs in Darlington, Sydney. Due to it’s location, most of the families that use The Settlement have a connection to The Block in Redfern, though services are open to all community members. The additional $88,752, the largest grant awarded in the Marrickville electorate, will allow The Settlement to continue with renovations the the hall that serves as the neighbourhood centre and hosts children’s and Youth programs.
Building work has already started, following a grant in last year’s CBP, a significant donation from DoCS, and a number of private donations including from the very generous (and personable) Peter Bond as part of the ‘Secret Millionaire’ program, and others.
The redevelopment of the hall will not only ensure a safe and proud space for existing programs, but will create extra and more appropriate spaces so that The Settlement can expand it’s range of services and assistance to the community.
As Chair of the board of The Settlement, I send a big thanks to the NSW Government for recognising the importance of funding capital works for community organisations (notoriously difficult to secure funding for!), and to all the donors that have made this project possible.
Fundraising continues to enable the completion of all stages of the project. If you’re in the mood for christmas giving, please consider The Settlement and visit this page. All donations, no matter how modest, are greatly appreciated!
